Origin and history

The archaeological museum of Izernore finds its origins in archaeological research carried out on the commune from the 18th century. The remains of an ancient temple, located northeast of the present agglomeration, aroused the interest of scholars as early as 1784, when a first excavation was organized. Research continued in the 19th and 20th centuries, gradually revealing the historical importance of the site.

Initially, the discoveries were kept in a excavation depot created in 1863, adjacent to the town hall. This repository was enriched with discoveries, evolving to officially become a "site museum" on September 17, 1911. This museum not only showcases the artifacts discovered, but also the methods and techniques of archaeology, thus offering an immersion in discipline.

Today, the museum is distinguished by a tour route structured around two main axes: the presentation of the ancient city of Izernore and its many facets, as well as an exploration of archaeological practices, from the excavation site to the study laboratory. The purpose of scenography is to make the scientific approach accessible, allowing the public to understand the key stages of archaeological research.
