Origin and history

The Camille Pissarro Museum was created in 1980 on the initiative of the Association of Friends of Camille Pissarro, founded in 1975. It is located in a building located on the ramparts of Pontoise, at the location of the old castle of the city. Inaugurated on November 22, 1980, it houses works by Pissarro, his children, as well as his friends artists such as Signac, Caillebotte, Matisse, Piette, Béliard and Hayet. The museum also has an archival collection and a collection of prints and drawings by Camille Pissarro, including two major paintings: Péniche sur la Seine (circa 1864) and La Brouette (circa 1881, deposit of the Musée d'Orsay).

The museum dominates the Oise Valley, a place that inspired many Impressionist artists in the 19th century. His temporary exhibitions highlight the landscape painting of this period and the links between Pissarro and the other artists who worked in the region. The house, located on the historic site of the old castle, offers an emblematic setting to discover Pissarro's work and its influence on modern art.

The museum is labeled Musée de France and is located at 17 rue du Château in Pontoise. Its address corresponds to the Insee 95211 code in the Val-d'Oise department. The collections and archives of the Friends of Camille Pissarro, gathered since 1975, enrich the understanding of the painter's work and his artistic context. The museum plays a key role in valuing the Impressionist heritage of the Île-de-France region.
