Origin and history

The Charles-Louis Philippe Museum is housed in the home of the French writer Charles-Louis Philippe (1879-1909), born in Cérilly in the Allier department. This small house with a narrow facade, raised on two floors and framed by two other buildings, now houses a museum dedicated to his life and work. The writer lived there until the age of 22, before becoming a major figure in French literature, co-founder of La Nouvelle Revue Française and author of notable works such as Bubu de Montparnasse or La Mère et l'Enfant.

The museum, created in 1937 and restored in 1994, has been labeled Musée de France since 2002 and Maisons des Illustres since 2012. He presents a reconstitution of the sabotier's workshop of the writer's father, as well as a bookshop. Visitors can discover Charles-Louis Philippe's exchanges with famous writers of his time, such as André Gide, Léon-Paul Fargue, Valéry Larbaud and Jean Giraudoux, illustrating his central role in the literary life of the early twentieth century.

The aim of the museum is to preserve the memory of this author, while offering a testimony of Bourbonese life through his childhood and his family environment. The site also serves as a resource centre for researchers and literary enthusiasts through its archives and permanent exhibitions.
