Origin and history

The Art and History Museum of Dreux is housed in a neo-Roman-style chapel built in 1895, originally linked to the Saint-Pierre boarding school (now Saint-Martin school). This place of worship, used until 1905, was sold to the commune in 1908 after the closure of the boarding school when the church and the state were separated. The chapel, partially classified as a historic monument in 2022, has been home to a municipal museum since 1950, founded under the leadership of Maurice Villette, Mayor of Dreux, with the help of Louis Gain.

In 1977, the museum was renamed in tribute to Marcel Dessal, its founder and curator until his death. It presents an encyclopaedic collection, including archaeological remains (including merovingians), religious works of art, impressionist paintings, and a unique collection of pipes offered by Igor Smirnoff. Among his master pieces is La Bataille de Dreux (1846), a monumental painting by Auguste-Hyacinthe Debay, gift of Louis-Philippe.

The museum, entirely renovated between 2004 and 2005, showcases local history, from prehistory to modern times, with objects linked to the collegiate Saint-Étienne, replaced by the Chapelle Royale (mausolee des Orléans). It benefits from the label Musée de France and is located in Place du Musée, in the historic centre of Dreux.

The chapel, damaged during World War II, was transformed into a museum space to preserve the Drouais heritage. Its facades and roofs, as well as those of the old boarding school, have been protected since 2022. The museum also preserves Romanesque capitals, 13th-14th century stained glass windows, and military uniforms, reflecting the diversity of its heritage.

The collections reflect Dreux's evolution, marked by his religious role (collegial, royal chapel) and industrial history. The museum also illustrates the transition from religious boarding school to a secular cultural space, symbolizing the social changes of the twentieth century.

Its official address, 5-7 Place du Musée, makes it a central place to discover the art, archaeology and history of Eure-et-Loir, in a region rich in medieval and modern heritage.
