Origin and history

The Louis-Senlecq Museum of Art and History of L-Isle-Adam is based on the initiative of Dr. Louis Senlecq, mayor of the city, surgeon and passionate about art and regional history. In 1939 he founded the "Association des Amis de L-Isle-Adam", whose statutes were published in the Official Journal on July 20 of the same year. The aim was to create a museum dedicated to local history and artistic figures that marked the city. Although the Second World War temporarily interrupted the project, the association resumed its activities in the 1950s, and the first exhibitions began in the 1970s. The collections, originally made up of donations from close friends of the founder, are then enriched by bequests from descendants of artists, collectors and patrons, as well as acquisitions and deposits of national institutions such as the Louvre or the Musée d'Orsay, from 1992.

The museum was established in 1939 in part of the House of the Josephites, a 17th century building (1661) commissioned by Prince Armand de Bourbon Conti to house a community of teaching priests. It was only in 1950 that the collections were open to the public in a few municipal halls. In the 1990s, a construction campaign allowed the museum to expand on three levels, before its closure in 2006 for renovation. During this period, its activities continue in an annex: the Jacques Henri Lartigue Art Center, inaugurated in 1998 in the former property of the Fritz family, linked to the history of the farmer General Bergeret of Grancourt. This centre bears witness to the friendship between photographer Jacques Henri Lartigue and Mayor Michel Poniatowski, who worked to enhance local heritage.

The museum's collections cover a variety of themes, from the School of the banks of the Oise (with Jules Dupré) to the urbanization of L'Isle-Adam in the 18th century, including exceptional funds such as Jules Romain Joyant, a watercolourist inspired by Venice, and Edward Knecht, pioneer of lithography. Local manufactures of terracotta (Hanne, Le Guluche) and art deco goldsmiths (Christian Fjerdingstad) also illustrate the local crafts and artistic industry. Finally, the donations of Jacques Henri Lartigue, totalling more than 1,400 works, allowed the creation of a space dedicated to this artist, strengthening the link between the museum and modern art.

The Musée Louis-Senlecq is labeled Musée de France and remains a key player in the preservation of local memory, combining history, art and industrial heritage. Its anchoring in the former Joséphite House, classified as a historical monument, and its extension to contemporary spaces reflect a desire to reconcile heritage and modernity, while highlighting major figures such as Bergeret, Fragonard or Lartigue, inseparable from the identity of L-Isle-Adam.
