Origin and history
The Baugé-en-Anjou Museum of Art and History was founded in 1905 by the municipality to house eclectic collections. It exhibits numismatic objects, ancient weapons, 15th and 16th century ceramics, as well as a cabinet of paleontological and ethnological curiosities. Some pieces, such as apothecary ceramics dating from 1720, are remarkable. The museum continues to enrich its collections, including ancient and contemporary ceramics, while organizing temporary exhibitions.
The museum showcases a varied heritage, including domestic and decorative ceramics (Nevers, Lyon, La Rochelle), civil and military weapons, as well as coins and coins from the 11th to the 19th century. A space is dedicated to local archaeological discoveries and objects reported from distant travels. Although temporarily closed pending a new case, some of the collections remain accessible during summer exhibitions.
The museum is housed in a 15th century castle, a former residence of King René d'Anjou, adding a historical dimension to its collections. Labelled Museum of France, it plays a major cultural role in the region, mixing ancient heritage and contemporary creation through annual exhibitions of modern ceramics.
