Origin and history
The Musée d'art et d'histoire militaire de Fontainebleau was founded in 1975 by the merger of two distinct entities: the Military Museum, founded in 1938 by Hugo de Fischner, and the Napoleonic Museum, created in 1963 by Master Prost. These two institutions, originally installed on Rue Royalet for the first, have united their collections to offer a complete panorama of military history, through more than 300 pieces covering uniforms, armaments and equipment.
The museum's collections cover a variety of themes, ranging from weapons and armor to military uniforms and artillery. They reflect the evolution of warfare techniques and practices throughout the eras. In 2019, the museum's library was transformed into a media library to enrich the cultural offer, while the building also houses exhibition spaces and museum reserves.
Located at 88 rue Saint-Honoré in Fontainebleau, the museum benefits from the label Musée de France. It is part of an approach to valuing local historical heritage, while proposing a thematic approach accessible to the public. The site is managed by the municipality, as evidenced by its connection to the municipal estate and its integration into the city's cultural projects, such as the recent renovation of its premises.
