Origin and history
The Musée d'Art Sacré de Murs-Saint-Eusèbe was created in 1986 thanks to the gift of the Cilleul Father. The latter, from his seminary, had undertaken to safeguard liturgical objects abandoned in the rural churches of the department. When he moved to Murs-Saint-Eusèbe in 1965, he already owned a rich collection of liturgical linen, which he later enriched with various gifts and deposits.
The collection, labeled Musée de France, brings together more than 30,000 objects (statues, altars, altarpieces, goldsmiths, textiles, etc.) illustrating religious and secular life from the 14th to the 20th century. These pieces, exhibited in the choir, sacristy and chapels of the Romanesque church, offer an anthropology of the religious fact, highlighting individual practices facing the Catholic dogma.
The museum highlights the exchanges between sacred space and secular space, through elements such as ex-votos, embroidered clothes or reliquaries. Its installation in a Romanesque church strengthens its historical and heritage anchor, while emphasizing the continuity of local religious practices.
