Origin and history
The Musée de Fontenay-le-Comte originated in the legacy of Eugene de Mouillebert in 1875, which offered the city its own collection of engravings, drawings, paintings and art objects. This initial legacy laid the foundation of the museum, although its final structure did not take place until 1924, after two other major donations. Today, the institution is dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of the cultural and historical heritage of the South-Vendée, with particular attention for the Gallo-Roman and Renaissance periods.
The museum's collections are distinguished by their thematic diversity. There are remarkable archaeological ensembles, such as Gallo-Roman glassware of the second century, considered among the richest in France. The ethnological sections illustrate traditional lifestyles (habitat, crafts, regional costumes), while the fine arts highlight local artists. A model of Fontenay-le-Comte at the Renaissance, the golden age of the city, as well as an ornithological collection complete by Dr. Guérin, further enrich his offer.
Located in a former 19th century presbytery, the museum benefits from the label Musée de France. Its thematic areas cover archaeology (from Prehistory to the Middle Ages), fine arts (paintings, sculptures, prints), ethnology (trades, tools, costumes) and natural sciences (ornithology). The official address, place of 137th Infantry Regiment, and its website reflect its anchor in the cultural life of Fontenay-le-Comte.
