Origin and history

The Musée de l'Horlogerie de Saint-Nicolas-d'Aliermont, located in the city centre, celebrates the region's watchmaking heritage since the beginning of the eighteenth century. Based on the initiative of local enthusiasts, it presents 400 objects illustrating the technical and artistic evolution of clocks, pendulums and chronometers manufactured in this Norman town, renowned for its mechanical precision. The adventure began in 1725 with the arrival of the watchmaker Charles-Antoine Croutte, who introduced the clock "with flowered heads", symbol of a know-how combining metallurgy and cabinetmaking.

In the 19th century, the Aliermontian watch industry diversified with figures such as Honoré Pons, a manufacturer of chimney clocks, or the company Reveilles Bayard, pioneer of serial revivals and collaborations with Disney in the 1930s. Local workshops also produce marine chronometers, essential for navigation, and industrial pointers, reflecting the adaptation to the technical needs of the time. The crisis of the 1970s threatened this heritage, pushing employees like Paul Caron and René Le Courtois to create the Association d'Horlogerie Aliermontaise (AHA) in 1981 to safeguard this legacy.

Inaugurated in 2007 after the donation of the AHA collection to the city, the museum occupies an 18th century Norman farmhouse enlarged by a contemporary extension. Its 350 m2 display rare pieces, from domestic clocks to scientific instruments, to mechanical toys and telephone devices manufactured by local companies such as Ericsson. The museum journey, interactive and fun, highlights various themes: the life of watchmakers, the measurement of time at work, or technical innovation, such as the travel clocks signed Couaillet Frères.

The museum also highlights the role of the surrounding forests, providing energy and raw materials, and that of metallurgist artisans installed from the 12th century along the Rouen-Côte road. Symbolic objects, such as Armand Couaillet's 500-piece travel clock or Mickey Mouse alarm clocks, illustrate the alliance between tradition and modernity. Today, Saint-Nicolas-d.

Recognized "Museum of France" in 2003, the institution maintains archives and oral testimonies that complement the collections. The flagship pieces include the regulators of Delépine or Guilbert, the marine chronometers of Onésime Dumas, and the creations of the company LLM, passed from the electronic fishing reels. The museum also celebrates social advances related to watchmaking, such as the pointers of Arthur Lambert, who revolutionized the management of working time in the early twentieth century.
