Origin and history
The Postcard Museum is located in the former port of Mortagne-sur-Gironde, a picturesque village on the right bank of the Gironde estuary in Charente-Maritime. Open to the public in 2003, it is the last-born museum in the Pays Royannais and helps to enhance the region's tourist heritage, in collaboration with other local museums. Its location, on the waterfront, recalls the historic importance of the port as a centre for trade and industrial activities.
The museum houses a collection of 300 reproductions of old postcards, black and white or coloured, illustrating the daily life and history of Mortagne-sur-Gironde and its inhabitants. These documents are complemented by plans and narratives dating back to the Carolingian era, especially during the reign of Pépin the Short. The aim is to preserve the local memory, thanks to the association L-Embarcadère, which manages the place and organizes events all year round, including the European Heritage Days.
Access to the museum is free of charge, and its activities are part of a heritage dissemination approach, in partnership with the Mortagne-sur-Gironde Tourist Office. The documentary collection, focused on village history, offers a unique insight into the development of the village, from its commercial role to its current tourist vocation. The museum thus plays a key role in transmitting the cultural identity of the right bank of the estuary.
