Origin and history

The Museum of Men's Clothing and Elegance comes from the flourishing textile industry of Argenton-sur-Creuse. In 1860, Charles Brillaud, a local industrialist, founded the first mechanical lingerie workshop, marking the beginning of an activity that would become the canton's main employer until the 1980s. Increasing competition then leads to the gradual closure of companies, threatening the memory of this industrial heritage.

In the 1980s, Jean-René Gravereaus, a former garment manufacturer, and his wife Solange launched the idea of creating a museum to preserve this heritage. Supported by workers, employers and elected officials, in 1983 they founded the Association of Friends of the Museum of Chemiserie-Lingerie (AMICL). A large collection is organized among the latest local companies (such as J.C.B. Confection or Rousseau) and the population, allowing to gather emblematic machines, tools, archives and clothing, including 19th-century peasant shirts and models from the 1880s to the 1920s.

Initially focused on women's shirt and lingerie, the project is moving towards a broader approach to male elegance. Between 1985 and 1993, the collections were enriched with costumes, accessories and documents related to fashion, such as the wardrobe of artist Jean-Claude Pascal, a gift that inspired the addition of masculine elegance in the name of the museum. He opened in 1993 in the former Brillaud workshop, renovated, and went under municipal management and then intermunicipal (CDC Éguzon Argenton Vallée de la Creuse in 2017).

The museum showcases a technical heritage (sewing machines, irons) and textiles (shirts, civil and military costumes), while exploring themes such as hygiene, tailor-made or contemporary creation. His journey illustrates the evolution of men's clothing from the 19th century to the present, and reflects the social and economic importance of clothing in Argenton-sur-Creuse. The former Brillaud workshop, with its Shed roofs, is a historical setting for these collections, symbolizing the link between industrial memory and clothing culture.
