Origin and history

Nicolas de Condorcet's home, located in Ribemont, Aisne, is a museum dedicated to philosopher, mathematician and political scientist (1743-1794). Built around 1700 for Claude Nicolas Gaudry, Condorcet's maternal grandfather, it was his birthplace in 1743. The house, modest architecturally but historically rich, also houses collections on other local personalities such as François Blondel or Léon Hennique.

The house changed owners over the centuries: it belonged in particular to novelist Léon Hennique (1850-1935), who received Émile Zola and Alphonse Daudet. Partially destroyed during World War I, it lost its 18th-century decorations and furniture. After a period of abandonment, it was acquired by the commune in 1989, restored, and reopened to the public in 2000 under the label Maisons des Illustres.

The museum presents documents on Condorcet, François Blondel (architect of the seventeenth century), General Le Blond de Saint-Hilaire, and Léon Hennique (first president of the Goncourt Academy). It also maintains archives of Ribemont's history. Ranked a historic monument in 1990, the house was inaugurated in 2001 by Robert Badinter, highlighting its heritage and cultural importance.
