Origin and history

The Musée de la maréchalerie et du charronage de Misy-sur-Yonne is a monument located in the municipality of the same name, in the Île-de-France region. This museum is dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of artisanal know-how related to the marechalerie (labour of horseshoes and metals) and the cartage (manufacture and repair of wooden tanks, carts and wheels). These trades, once essential for transport and agriculture, illustrate an important part of the French technical and rural heritage.

In the Île-de-France region, as in many rural areas, these craft activities played a key role in the local economy until the beginning of the 20th century. Marshal-ferrants and cartrons were must-see figures of the villages, ensuring the mobility of people and goods. Their work also reflected a social organization where each trade had its place in daily life and at local festivals.
