Origin and history

The Musée de l'Abbey Saint-Michel de Gaillac occupies the basements of the former abbey, including its cellars built in the 12th century and subsequently rebuilt in the 19th century by architect Alexandre Du Mège. These vaulted areas in red bricks, decorated in 1940 by Louis Cabanes and René Lala-Gaillard, house frescoes illustrating the grape varieties and coats of arms of local wine villages. The museum trail, built in 1995, highlights this historical setting while obtaining the label Musée de France in 2003.

Part of the collections is dedicated to the history of Gaillac, with a Roman mosaic discovered on site and a model of the Abbey. The museum also evokes the work of the Tarn boatmen, thanks to objects exported via the local port and a Gabar reconstruction (traditional boat). Vine and wine, pivotal to the Gaillac economy, are represented by photographs of terroirs, soil samples, and ancient tools of viticulture and cooperage.

The religious component of the site appears in a hall dedicated to sacred clothing, where priestly costumes and wood paintings are displayed. Another section presents masterpieces of companionship, while an audiovisual space traces local history. In 2010, a temporary exhibition highlighted regional costumes, with works by painter Firmin Salabert. Finally, in 2018, the auditorium was named in tribute to Angelita Bettini del Rio, former internee of the Brens camp, to mark the 75th anniversary of the Liberation.

The wall decorations of 1940, combining art and wine symbols, underline the link between the architectural heritage and the cultural identity of Gaillac. The presence of a commemorative plaque and objects related to the Resistance also recalls the historical stakes of the twentieth century in the region.
