Origin and history

The Royan Museum came into being in 1885 with the creation of the municipal museum, initially housed in the town hall and then transferred to the casino in Foncillon. It housed various collections: fossils, naturalized animals, archaeological remains and an important collection of butterflies brought together by Fernand Braun. These collections were almost entirely destroyed during the bombing on 5 January 1945, which also razed the building.

The renaissance of the post-war museum was driven by local scholars such as Louis Basalo and Robert Colle. They reconstructed the collections through archaeological excavations in the country and private donations. In 2004, the museum settled permanently in the former halls of Pontaillac, a rehabilitated market, where it now offers a chronological journey from Antiquity to Reconstruction.

The museum is distinguished by its rich collection of furniture from the 1950s, the most important in France in 2008, reflecting the emblematic architecture of the post-war city. A cabinet of curiosities recreates the spirit of the museum of the 1930s, organized in three sections: Artifecalia (artificial objects), Naturalia (natural history) and Exotica (exotic objects). An archaeological section presents recent discoveries, including those of the Fâ site, while a central hall hosts temporary cultural exhibitions.

Among its flagship works, the museum exhibits five paintings by Fernand Pinal depicting Royan landscapes, as well as historical engravings such as Pierre Ozanne's Le port de Royan in 1776 or Caspar Merian's old plans. These pieces illustrate Royan's urban and landscape evolution throughout the centuries. The museum also organizes thematic exhibitions, such as Royan in engravings (2009) or Royan: photographs of Reconstruction (2013), highlighting its graphic and architectural heritage.
