Origin and history

The Seine-et-Marne departmental museum has its origins in the history of the Modern Hotel, built in 1905 by Georges Simon in Saint-Cyr-sur-Morin. This building, originally linked to a sawmill and commercial activities (wood, coal, grocery), also welcomed a clientele of commissionaires. The sawmill, modernized by Georges Simon's son in the 1920s, closed permanently in 1987, marking the end of a local industrial era.

In 1926, the Guibert family, originally from Paris, acquired the hotel and developed an inn. Pierre Guibert, fascinated by traditional tools, is a collection of rural objects that he exhibited in 1956. When they retired in 1987, the Guiberts transferred the inn and its collection to the Conseil Général de Seine-et-Marne. The museum, enriched by donations and collections, opened in 1995 under the name Musée départemental des Pays de Seine-et-Marne, before becoming in 2011 the Musée départemental de Seine-et-Marne.

The museum showcases regional ethnography, with archives, tools, costumes and a traditional plant garden. He also retained a literary part dedicated to Pierre Mac Orlan. The former hotel, labeled Heritage of Regional Interest, was transformed by architect Pierre Mougin, while the museum was designed by Pierre-Yves Catel and Olivier Schimmenti. The site illustrates the transition between a rural artisanal economy and modernity, through technical and historical collections.
