Origin and history

The Musée des monuments français offers a complete panorama of French architecture, sculpture and painting through more than 6,000 life-size moulds and 5,000 m2 of wall paintings, covering periods from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. His collections begin with pre-Romanesque and Romanesque works, such as those of Jouarre, Saint-Genis-des-Fontaines, or emblematic sites such as Saint-Sernin in Toulouse, Moissac, and Conques. Gothic art and sculptures from the 15th to the 18th centuries are also widely represented, while rooms dedicated to murals are organized on three levels, presenting missing or preserved works in situ, classified by geographical areas or coherent ensembles.

The museum was established in 1937 in the Paris wing of the Palais de Chaillot, designed by architects Léon Azema, Jacques Carlu and Louis-Hippolyte Boileau, on the occasion of the Universal Exhibition of the same year. This new space replaces the former museum of comparative sculpture, founded in 1882 by the architect Viollet-le-Duc in the Palais du Trocadéro, built for the Universal Exhibition of 1879. The reconstruction of the building in 1937 allowed to expand the premises and enrich the sections dedicated to monumental art. Since 2004, the museum has been integrated into the Cité de l'architecture & du patrimoine, consolidating its role in the preservation and dissemination of French heritage.

The museum occupies a central place in the valorisation of the French architectural and sculptural heritage, with collections covering masterpieces such as the portals of Cluny, Notre-Dame du Port in Clermont-Ferrand, or Saint-Trophime in Arles. Its assets lie in the diversity of periods and styles represented, offering visitors an immersion in the evolution of techniques and artistic currents, from pre-Roman France to the Renaissance. The label Musée de France and its integration into a wider cultural complex, such as the Cité de l'architecture, reinforce its importance in the national heritage landscape.
