Origin and history

The Spahis Museum of Senlis is a military museum dedicated to the regiments of light colonial cavalry, the spahis, located in the commune of Senlis (Oise). Created in 1978, it first occupied the hotel built by Raoul I of Vermandois, then the chapel of Chancellor Guérin in the episcopal palace, before settling definitively in 1991 in a house acquired by the municipality at the entrance of the Royal Castle. This move has made it possible to centralize the collections and provide a suitable framework for their presentation.

The museum's presence in Senlis is explained by the military history of the city, which housed two spahis regiments: the 4th Moroccan spahis regiment from 1928 to 1939, and the 7th Algerian spahis regiment from 1948 to 1962, the year of its dissolution. These successive garrisons have long marked local memory and justified the creation of a space dedicated to their heritage.

The museum's collections were mainly formed by an agreement signed in 1993 between the city of Senlis and the Association "Le Burnous", founded in 1895. This association brings together former members of colonial bodies, such as spahis, gourmands, meharists and Saharans, and has played a key role in preserving and transmitting this military heritage. The museum thus preserves objects, uniforms and archives bearing witness to the history of these units.

Collection

L'essentiel des collections du musée a été constitué grâce à une convention passée entre la ville et l'Association « Le Burnous » fondée en 1895 et regroupant d'anciens Spahis, Goumiers, Méharistes et Sahariens.
