Origin and history
The Rouffach Bailiage Museum is a building located in the town of Rouffach, in the Greater East Region. This monument, whose construction period is not specified in the available sources, bears the name of "baillage", suggesting a historical link with the local judicial or seigneurial administration. Internal data do not provide any additional information on its architecture or evolution over the centuries.
The bailiffs were, under the Old Regime, essential institutions in the territorial and judicial organization. In Rouffach, as in other Alsatian cities, these structures played a central role in managing local affairs, collecting taxes and enforcing justice. Although this museum today bears this name, current sources do not allow to trace its original use or subsequent transformations.
