Origin and history
The Biterrois Museum, located in Béziers in the Saint-Jacques district, was a museum classified as the Musée de France. Created in 1834, it occupied an 18th century barracks (1702), built by the architect of Aviler. His collections, rich in archaeology, paleontology, ethnology and natural history, came from donations from local societies such as the Archaeological Society or the Society for the Study of Natural Sciences. The museum traced regional history, from the first human traces to the wine revolt, through Catholicism, Protestantism and Freemasonry.
The Biterrois Museum has definitely closed its doors to the public. His collections will be transferred to the future Musée d'art et d'histoire de Béziers, planned for 2025 in the former Palace of Bishops. This project aims to consolidate and enhance a scattered heritage, while providing a modern space for exhibitions. The museum also hosted conferences, strengthening its role as a place for cultural and scientific transmission.
The topics covered covered various aspects of local history: the Roman era, the Burgundy culture, the repression against the Albiges, the creation of the Canal du Midi, and the region's natural specificities. The collections also included objects related to local wildlife, illustrating the diversity of Béziers' natural and historical heritage and its surroundings.
