Origin and history
The Hanau Country Museum was founded in 1934 in Bosselshausen (now located in Bouxwiller, Bas-Rhin). At its beginning, it had only one room and about 1,600 objects. Its development accelerated in 1982, with seven exhibition rooms and a collection of more than 15,000 pieces, covering various fields such as archaeology, ethnology, local history and natural sciences. The museum is housed in a historic building: an old 16th-century grained hall, backed by the 14th-century Saint-Georges Castral Chapel.
After a complete renovation, the museum reopens in June 2013 with modernised spaces. His collections include objects related to daily life in the 19th century in the land of Hanau, furniture and personal effects of Marie Hart (Marie-Anne Hartmann), dialectical poetess, as well as funds specialized in mineralogy, paleontology and Protestant art. A library of 5,000 volumes supports research on regional history, while themes such as the Bastberg (Geological Site) or traditional trades are highlighted.
Labelled Museum of France, the establishment highlights eclectic collections: musical instruments, traditional costumes, weapons and armor, numismatics, and philately. Its territorial anchoring is reinforced by its association with the chapel Saint-Georges and the wheat hall, witnesses to the medieval and modern history of Bouxwiller. The museum thus plays a key role in preserving and transmitting the material and intangible heritage of the country of Hanau.
