Origin and history
Born in 1913 in Seine-et-Marne, Father Robert Pinchon moved to Martinique in 1945, where he devoted his life to theology, philosophy and natural sciences. It gathers nearly 10,000 pieces, including works and naturalist samples, reflecting its passion for biodiversity, including ferns and the Antillean seabed. His work, marked by expeditions like Madibenthos, explores the natural riches of the West Indies.
Upon his death in 1980, his collection was entrusted to the Congregation of the Fathers of the Holy Spirit and deposited in 1994 with the community of Martinique. The museum occupies the former villa Chams, a 460 m2 building in Fort-de-France, labeled Musée de France. The site highlights its herbarium boards and its commitment to the preservation of the Antillean natural heritage.
The museum, located at 87 Tivoli Post Colon, is a testimony of Father Pinchon's scientific and spiritual heritage. Its official address, registered under the code Insee 97209, makes it a key place to understand Martinique's natural history. The site also offers online resources via the territorial community portal.
