Origin and history
The Museum of Rethelois and Porcian was created in 1930 by local cultural enthusiasts, initially exhibited at one of the founders. Inaugurated in 1933, he received the same year's award for ethnography from the National Academy of Reims (founded Hugues Krafft). The collections, first presented to the Rethel Tribunal, moved in 1938 for space reasons, then returned after the war with an expansion.
In the 1980s, the city reversed the Tribunal, forcing collections to be kept in reserve. Since then, they have been exposed on an ad hoc basis to the City Hall or during loans. Since October 2018, a space of 140 m2 at the media library-museum l-Agora (Rethelois Country) hosts temporary thematic exhibitions, integrated with the local cultural offer.
The museum is distinguished by its regional archaeology and ethnography ensembles, complemented by religious sculptures, paintings, and Asian and African collections. Labeled Museum of France, it covers various fields: national archaeology, religious art, decorative arts (ceramic), fine arts, extra-European civilizations, and numismatics.
