Origin and history

The Revermont Museum was inaugurated in 1986 thanks to the joint initiative of the Friends of Treffort-Cuisiat, the Department of Ain and the Municipality. As early as 1987, an agreement formalizes its attachment to the Museum of Ain Countries as a "Revermont" pole. This pioneering project, the department's first ethnographic museum, aims to preserve the region's tangible and intangible heritage, with an emphasis on agricultural, artisanal and school traditions.

Between 1988 and 1990, the museum launched an inventory of local varieties of cultivated plants and created a vegetable garden-garden, reflecting the importance of botanical know-how in the history of Revermont. In 1998, the museum was decentralized, while the Friends of the Museum association continued its missions of collecting objects, archives and oral testimonies. These efforts document various themes, from the phylloxera wine crisis to the lives of children abandoned in the 19th century.

The museum highlights key aspects of Revermont society through thematic exhibitions. "Vines and Cavets" evokes the disappearance of local vineyards after the phylloxera crisis, while "Being a child in Revermont" and "La Communale" restore the childish condition between the 19th century and the Second World War, with a classroom reconstructed at the same time as Jules Ferry. "La Manufacture de Meillonnas" traces the history of the local fayencerie (1760–70), founded by Baroness and Baron Marron de Meillonnas.

The vegetable garden, an integral part of the museum, embodies the desire to preserve a threatened plant heritage. Crops, whether they are used as food, medicines or artisanal raw materials, bear witness to past lifestyles and know-how. This hybrid place, both museum and living space, illustrates the symbiosis between human history and environment in the Revermont.
