Origin and history

The Musée d'Art naïve et d'Arts singulares (MANAS) in Laval is based on the donation of Jules Lefranc, a Laval naïve artist. In 1965, he proposed to the City of Laval that he bequeath his collection of naive art, provided that a dedicated museum was created. Thanks to the commitment of artists such as Jean-Pierre Bouvet and Andrée Bordeaux-Lepecq, the Musée Henri Rousseau opened in 1967 in the Vieux-Château, becoming the first French establishment dedicated to this artistic current.

Originally focused on naïve art, the museum was enriched in 1973 by works from marginal and singular arts, thus expanding its scope of study. His collections, structured in five sections, highlight major figures such as Henri Rousseau, Séraphine de Senlis and Ivan Generalić, while exploring the links between naive art and academic traditions. The Lefranc donation, the heart of the museum, included fifteen paintings by the artist and fifteen works from his personal collection.

MANAS has established itself as a dynamic cultural actor, offering temporary exhibitions, educational workshops and off-the-wall events, such as the "caisses du musée", travelling installations recreating the world of flagship works. Since 2015, its policy of openness to the public has allowed a steady increase in its attendance. The Old Castle, classified as a Historical Monument in 1840, houses a museum resolutely oriented towards the valorization of self-taught and singular arts.

The museum's management has evolved with notable figures: Jean-Pierre Bouvet (1967)–1976, Charles Schaettel (1976–1990), Marie-Colette Depierre (1990–2003), Estelle Fresneau (2003–2006), and Antoinette Le Falher since 2006. These curators contributed to enriching the collections and asserting the singularity of MANAS, between historical heritage and cultural innovation.
