Origin and history

The Gatien-Bonnet Museum was founded in 1865 by Dr.Gatien-Bonnet, Mayor of Lagny-sur-Marne from 1860 to 1875. Inaugurated in 1868 in a hall of the city hall, it was created to preserve and exhibit local collections. This passionate doctor of history and art marked the city by legging a space dedicated to culture, reflecting his commitment to local heritage.

In 1935, the museum was reorganized and transferred in 1961 to the former home of Dr.Paul d'Halluin, also Mayor of Lagny from 1935 to 1938. After renovations in 1988, he reopened his doors with a modernized museum. The collections, enriched over the decades, covered archaeology, ethnology, local history and fine arts, highlighting the Lagny Group, a circle of neo-impressionist artists active in the region between 1885 and 1905.

Among the flagship works were paintings such as the Death of Socrates (1789) by Mottet or paintings by Émile-Gustave Cavallo-Péduzzi, illustrating rural life around Lagny. A collection of daguerreotypes by Louis Adolphe Humbert de Molard (1800-1874) completed this set. Labeled "Museum of France", he closed permanently in 2021, his collections being transferred to the castle of the Cultural Park of Rentilly in Bussy-Saint-Martin.

The building, located 8 courtyard Pierre Herbin, was a central place for local memory, evoking both regional antiquity and artistic life of the late nineteenth century. Its history reflects the evolution of municipal museums, from cabinets of curiosity to structured cultural spaces, before its recent closure.
