Origin and history

The L'Herminier Museum, located in Pointe-à-Pitre, was created in tribute to the naturalists Félix and Ferdinand L'Herminier, key figures in the study of biodiversity in Guadeloupe. This museum of natural history once housed a rich collection of specimens from the Caribbean region, reflecting the importance of the work of the Herminier brothers in local scientific knowledge.

Over time, the museum's collections have dispersed or disappeared, leaving the building as the only testimony of this institution. Despite the loss of its artifacts, the museum retains its status as Musée de France and remains a symbol of Guadeloupe's scientific and cultural heritage. Its current address, at 62 Rue Victor Schoelcher, makes it a place accessible to visitors interested in the natural and colonial history of the island.

The location of the museum, noted as fair in terms of accuracy, and its official label underline its anchoring in the cultural landscape of Pointe-à-Pitre. Although the original collections have disappeared, the building itself embodies the memory of naturalist research carried out in the 18th and 19th centuries in the West Indies, as well as the inheritance of the brothers L'Herminier, whose names remain associated with this place.
