Origin and history

The church of Notre-Dame de Lamourguier in Narbonne was originally a Benedictine priory affiliated with the Abbey of Saint-Victor of Marseilles in the 11th century. Disused of worship, it was transformed into a lapidary deposit in 1868 to preserve steles, columns and sarcophagi from the Narbon walls. Its southern Gothic architecture, marked by a unique nave and diaphragm arches, reflects its past defensive role.

In the 13th century, the church was rebuilt in a gothic Languedoc style, with a vaulted apse and side chapels. After the Revolution, the convent buildings were destroyed, but the church, classified in 1900, still housed archaeological collections until their transfer in 2018 to the Narbo Via Museum. It also served briefly as a seat in the Club de la Révolution in 1871.

The building preserves traces of its turbulent history: a bay in the middle of the wall and a 12th century gate, as well as a defensive tower adjacent to the old ramparts. Its triforium and carved consoles testify to its religious and military importance in the medieval village of Narbonne.
