Origin and history
The museum The Hercules Sources was born from an initial archaeological search carried out in an emergency and then transformed into a programmed search on a private plot of land in Baccarat. This research revealed a Gallo-Roman sanctuary dedicated to the sources, marked by the exceptional presence of a hundred statues dedicated to Hercules. The owner of the land, after the discovery, offered all the collections to the municipality, allowing them to be preserved and valued.
The museum's collection includes about a hundred steles, some very fragmentary, as well as modest archaeological furniture (ceramics, jewellery). This sanctuary is recognized as the most important source site dedicated to Hercules in the Roman Gaul. Its present restitution faithfully reproduces the state of the place in the middle of the fourth century, with statues and basins placed at their original location, in scrupulous respect for the dimensions and relief of the era.
Ranked as Musée de France, the site is managed by the commune of Deneuvre (near Baccarat), in the department of Meurthe-et-Moselle. His interest lies in the rarity of well-preserved Gallo-Roman sanctuaries, offering a unique testimony to the religious and artistic practices of this period. However, GPS location and administrative data relate to Deneuvre, although its name and history are associated with Baccarat.
