Origin and history
The Municipal Museum of Villefranche-de-Lonchat was founded in 1939 from documents and collections gathered by Léonie Gardeau. It covers various fields such as national archaeology (Prehistory, Protohistory, Gallo-Roman, Paleo-Christian, Medieval), religious art (with a baptismal tank classified as Historic Monument), ethnology (habitat, furniture, trades and tools) and local and regional history. The museum is housed in an 18-metre-long cubic building, built in 1850, with stone architecture and monumental interior decoration.
Among the remarkable pieces exhibited are a classified baptismal tank, the faiences of Montpeyroux from the early 19th century, as well as church furniture from the 17th and 18th centuries. The museum also houses objects related to ancient housing and crafts. The building itself, an ancient house of notable, presents a slate roof with terrace, pediments and balusters, reflecting the bourgeois architecture of the period.
The museum is labeled "Musée de France" and is located at the Villefranche-de-Lonchat Town Hall in the Dordogne department. Its exact address is 38 Rue Sully, and it is referenced under Insee 24083. The accuracy of its location is estimated as fair, and it has a dedicated website for more information.
