Origin and history
The Châlons-en-Champagne Municipal Museum was founded in the first departmental museum, created in 1794 from revolutionary confiscations. These works, initially stored in an annex to the library, formed a modest collection in the 18th century. It was only in 1861, with the bequest of Charles Picot (575 paintings and art objects), that the municipal museum really took shape, marking its official birth.
As early as 1826, a place dedicated to the edible market was set up near the Town Hall, including a building with butcher stalls on the ground floor and classrooms upstairs. In 1847, under the administration of Mayor Alexandre Godart, the square was redeveloped, and the sculpture collections were exhibited there from 1883. At the same time, the museum settled in 1879 in a painting gallery built by architect Vagny on the site of the old prisons along Godart Square.
The monumental façade of the museum, overlooking Godart Square, was completed at the beginning of the 20th century with the construction of the corner pavilion. This architecture gives the museum its present appearance. The collections, enriched over time, include major works: 1,972 naturalized birds, furniture from the 15th century to Art Nouveau, tapestries, medieval sculptures in Rodin, and 300 paintings covering five centuries of European art. The sculptures of South India complete this eclectic ensemble.
Today, the museum is labeled Musée de France and is located in Godart Square, in a building combining architectural history and artistic heritage. Its revolutionary origin and its private legacy make it a witness to the cultural and urban developments of Châlons-en-Champagne.
