Origin and history
The Escaudain Municipal Museum was founded in 1978 under the leadership of André Lebon, who ensured its associative conservation for twenty-five years. Located in the former town hall, it extends over 200 m2 and is dedicated to the preservation of local memory, notably through collections related to the mining industry and traditional trades. Its initial designation, Museum of Mining and Popular Traditions, reflects this dual ethnological and historical vocation.
The permanent exhibitions present period mining tools, traditional costumes, models and photographic archives, illustrating the daily lives of the inhabitants and the evolution of industrial techniques. The museum particularly highlights the technical and social heritage of the region, with a focus on the extractive activities that marked the economic history of Escaudain and Nord-Pas-de-Calais. Its label Musée de France attests to its institutional recognition.
The location of the museum, at 145 Paul Bert Street, and its integration into the urban fabric of Escaudain (code Insee 59205) make it a place rooted in local cultural life. Although its geographical accuracy is considered fair (note 5/10), it remains a reference point for understanding the industrial heritage of Hauts-de-France. Available sources, such as Monumentum and Museofile data, confirm its role in valuing the physical and intangible heritage of the municipality.
