Origin and history
The Tonnerre Municipal Museum came into being in 1835, when it was created as a complement to the municipal library and installed in a college. In 1860 he was transferred to the old hospital of the city, before being permanently installed in 1895 in its present location, a building bequeathed by Madame Coeurderoy. This building, a former hospital-hotel-god, was built between 1292 and 1295 thanks to the generosity of Marguerite de Bourgogne, sister-in-law of Saint Louis, and now houses various collections.
The museum is organized on two floors and presents objects related to hospital life from the 13th to the 20th century. His remarkable pieces include a horizontal sundial drawn on the ground, a sculpted Tombing of the 15th century, and the only reliable representation known to Marguerite de Bourgogne. Its collections cover such diverse fields as fine arts, ethnology, local history and natural sciences, with themes ranging from religious art to medical science.
The former hospital, classified as a Historical Monument, illustrates the evolution of medical and charitable practices in Tonnerre. The museum, labeled Musée de France, highlights this heritage through works such as ceramics, furniture or goldsmithy, while highlighting the historical role of Marguerite de Bourgogne in the foundation of the establishment. Its current address, rue du Prieuré, corresponds to the location of the former hotel-god, testifying to the continuity between past and present.
