Origin and history

The Port Royal des Champs National Museum is located on the historic site of Port Royal des Champs Abbey and its Granges farm in Magny-les-Hameaux (Yvelines). Founded in 1962 after the acquisition by the State of the "Small Schools" and their extension in 1952, it was inaugurated by André Malraux. Bernard Dorival, responsible for his organization since 1953, structured his collections around the Jansenist and artistic heritage of the Abbey, thanks in particular to works by Philippe de Champaigne and Jean Restout.

The museum's permanent collections bring together 17th-century engravings, ancient books, portraits and devotional objects, illustrating the consciousness drama associated with Port Royal. A section is dedicated to the 18th century convulsive movement, with drawings by Jean Restout. The site also includes the ruins of the Abbey, acquired in 2004 by donation from the Société de Port-Royal, and the Granges farm, purchased by the State in 1983.

Since the 2000s, the museum has valued its estate with the reconstruction of the Solitaire orchard and the replanting of the historic vine. It also hosts concerts in the Wheat Barn or the Gazier Hall. Temporary exhibitions, since 1955, have explored various themes, from Racine and Pascal to 17th century religious art, including retrospectives dedicated to Philippe de Champaigne or Jean Restout.

The museum relies on partnerships with the Port Royal Corporation and local associations to preserve this heritage. Its cultural role extends beyond collections, with artistic programming and garden restoration projects, such as those led by the Friends of the Outside Association.
