Origin and history

The Pasteur Museum opened in 1935 at 25 Rue du Droit-Roux, in the 15th arrondissement of Paris, within the Institut Pasteur. He was born from a family donation in the 1930s: Louis Pasteur Vallery-Radot, grandson of the scholar, legume furniture and objects belonging to his grandparents to reconstruct their apartment. This place, preserved in its original state, also illustrates the Parisian bourgeois habitat of the late 19th century. The building was classified as historical monuments in 1981.

The apartment, occupied by Louis Pasteur for the last seven years of his life, is the heart of the museum. The visit ends with a Byzantine-inspired chapel designed by architect Charles Girault. His crypt, where Pastor and his wife are resting, is decorated with mosaics made by the Guilbert-Martin workshop after drawings by Luc-Olivier Merson. These works evoke the scientific work of the scientist.

Closed for work since an unspecified date, the museum must reopen in 2027. Its reopening will make it possible to rediscover this unique testimony of the life and heritage of Louis Pasteur, within an institute always dedicated to medical research.
