Origin and history

The Vans Museum came into being in 1875 when local scholars, including Odilon Barrot, Georges Mathieu and L'Abbé Canaud, organized a private exhibition in the railway station district. This group, including Joseph Vaschalde and the Marquis de Chambonas, lays the foundations of a museum dedicated to history and local sciences. The original collections are enriched by the donations of the founders' heirs, especially after Louis Rey revived the project in 1923.

In 1951, Louis Rey and Commander Marchand installed the museum in a hall of the Vans Town Hall, opening its doors for the first time to the public upon request. The collections then extend to African geology and ethnography, thanks to the contributions of Commander Marchand and the legacy of Dr.Jos Jullien, a prehistorian. Louis Rey, a central figure, became a major donor, consolidating the museum's funds.

After Louis Rey died in 1964, René Évesque, his collaborator, took over the management of the museum. In 1977, the acquisition of the former Saint Joseph convent by the town hall allowed for the transfer of collections, offering a suitable space. René Évesque founded in 1980 the association of the Museum of Vans, which manages the institution until 2014 under public service delegation. The museum, labeled Musée de France, highlights the diversity of the Ardèche Cevennes through collections of geology, archaeology, ethnography and medicine.

Today, the museum offers temporary exhibitions and cultural events (concerts, conferences), while preserving a heritage linked to local industrial history, such as the former silk spinning. Its territorial anchor makes it a key place to understand the identity of this region marked by 550 million years of geology.
