Origin and history
The Old Nogent Museum finds its origins in the initiative of a local scholar group passionate about the history of their city. As early as 1949, collections were gradually formed before becoming municipal in 1976. These collections, composed of paintings, prints, objects, archives and photographs, reflect the daily life of the inhabitants of Nogent-sur-Marne and the neighbouring communes of Marne. Their apparent diversity hides a coherence: to preserve the memory of the territory, the East of Paris and its social and cultural developments.
The exhibition "If Nogent was told", organized in 1957 by the Historical Society in the room Emile-Zola, marks a turning point. Presenting more than 300 private documents, it prefigures the future museum, both in its content and in its thematic structure. Four years later, on December 9, 1961, the Old Nogent Museum was officially inaugurated. Its 6,000 pieces, mostly from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, offer a complete panorama of local history, from decorative arts to photography, archives and fine arts.
Labeled "Museum of France", the establishment stands out for its territorial anchor. Its collections cover not only Nogent-sur-Marne, but also the surrounding communes of Marne and Eastern Paris. The museum thus illustrates the transformations of a territory marked by its proximity to Paris, through various media: medals, prints, rare books or periodicals. Its address at 36 Gallieni Boulevard makes it a central place for the preservation and dissemination of this local heritage.
