Origin and history

The Alesia Museum finds its origins in the collections of the Semur-en-Auxois Society of Historical and Natural Sciences, founded in 1842. As early as 1905, the company undertook excavations on the plateau d'Alésia and formed an archaeological base (medals, statues, objects) from the Roman siege of 52 B.C. and the Gallo-Roman city. A first museum opened in 1910 in Alise-Sainte-Reine, enriched later by the collections of Napoleon III and the excavations of Commander Espérandieu (integrated in 1972).

In 2001, the Department of the Gold Coast assumed responsibility for the conservation of the site and collections, officially deposited in 2011. The excavations carried out between 1991 and 1997 by Michel Reddé and Sigmar Von Schnurbein confirm the location of the headquarters of Alésia in the canton of Venarey-lès-Laumes. The present museum, labeled Musée de France in 2003 (extended in 2017), has been managed by the local public company MuséoParc Alésia since its reopening in 2021, after restoration of major pieces.

The interpretive centre, designed by architect Bernard Tschumi, offers a modern scenography (maquettes, films, reconstructions of the Roman fortifications) to relive the battle and explore the history of the site, from Neolithic to Gallo-Roman times. Its symbolic architecture (circular form, larch net) evokes the siege of Alesia, while its atrium with oblique columns recalls the chaos of the fighting. The course also includes archaeological objects, the Ucuetis monument and the ancient theatre.

The site, classified as a national heritage, combines historical memory and museum innovation. The collections, from decades of research, offer an immersion in everyday life and military techniques of the time, while emphasizing the strategic importance of Alésia in the history of Gaul. The reopening of 2021 marks a new step in the valorisation of this emblematic place, combining scientific rigour and public accessibility.
