Origin and history

The Municipal Museum of La Roche-sur-Yon was established in 1847 and initially installed on the first floor of the city hall. As early as 1854, the Société d'Emulation de la Vendée was responsible for enriching its collections, focusing on fine arts, archaeology and natural sciences. The current building, designed by architect Auguste Boudaud, was completed in 1880 after a municipal vote in 1877. It then houses both the museum and the trial court, reproducing the volumes of the city hall opposite.

After World War II, the museum occupies the entire building, without any major expansion. In 1972, its management was entrusted to the Departmental Museum Conservation in Vendée, before the city regained control in 1982. A new orientation towards contemporary art, including plastic photography, emerged, with significant acquisitions (Andy Warhol, Cindy Sherman, Andreas Gursky). The museum reopened in 2003 after a technical closure in 1997, obtaining the label Musée de France.

Since 2003, the museum has been presenting its collections by rolling through temporary exhibitions (4-5 per year). He also manages Cyel's space for contemporary art, dedicated to ephemeral exhibitions. Closed to the public since June 2019, it must be transferred in 2028 place Napoleon, in the former premises of the Conservatoire. His collections include 175 paintings (XVIIth–XXth centuries), 3,000 graphic arts, and a recognized contemporary photographic background, including works by major artists such as Jeff Wall or Christian Boltanski.

The museum preserves emblematic pieces, such as the Battle of Jacob with the angel of Paul Baudry (1853) or autochromes of the 1920s–30s. His past exhibitions, often labeled of national interest, explored various themes: Napoleonic (Charlet, 2008), Egyptology (L The museum regularly publishes catalogues such as The Photographic Collection of the Musée de La Roche-sur-Yon (1983–2016) (2017).

The collections reflect three main themes: academic painting (Baudry, Vernet-Lecomte), landscapes (École de Barbizon, vendean artists like Milcendeau), and contemporary art (plastic photography, Land Art). Featured works include drawings by Hubert Robert, sculptures by Rodin, and photographs by Karen Knorr or Éric Poitevin. The museum is distinguished by its local anchor (Vendean fonds) and its international opening (Hungarian, British artists).
