Origin and history
The Municipal Museum of Bagas is actually located in La Réole, in the department of Gironde, New Aquitaine. He occupied the premises of a former Benedictine priory built in 1704 by architect Mazey. This building, which became National Good during the French Revolution, now houses the city's administrative services while welcoming the museum's collections. Its architecture is distinguished by grids and ironwork signed by Blaise Charlut, as well as a stairwell illuminated by an oval dome, complemented by an interior cloister.
The museum's collections come mainly from donations or bequests from Réolais. They cover various fields: archaeology (Prehistory, Protohistory, Medieval period), decorative arts (textiles), performing arts (like an arc lighting projector), fine arts (painting, sculpture), military collections (uniforms, armor), manuscripts, numismatics, ethnology (costumes, tools), and natural sciences (malacology, paleontology). These objects reflect both local and regional history, as well as broader themes such as religious art or industrial technology.
The museum benefits from the label Musée de France and is located on the Esplanade Charles de Gaulle in La Réole. Although its approximate GPS address is associated with Rue Jean Renou, its precise location remains to be confirmed, with an accuracy assessed as fair (note of 5/10). The priory, as a historical monument, bears witness to the architectural and cultural heritage of the Gironde, while serving as a framework for eclectic collections from the generosity of the inhabitants.
