Origin and history

The Belfort Fine Arts Museum is part of a network of jointly managed municipal museums, including art, history and archaeology collections. Originally from the museum of art and history founded in 1872 by the Belfortian Society of emulation, it was enriched by bequests and acquisitions, leading to a distribution on several sites. The Fine Arts section, installed at Tower 41, presents 150 works ranging from the high Middle Ages to the contemporary era, with state deposits and private donations, including those of Camille Lefèvre in 1933.

The collections of the Museum of Fine Arts originally come from state deposits (François-Joseph Heim, Gustave Doré) and donations (Albrecht Dürer, Gustave Courbet, Léon Lehmann). In 1933, Camille Lefèvre presented his works as well as those of major artists such as Auguste Rodin, Eugène Carrière and Paul Signac. Recent acquisitions have expanded the fund with pieces by Vincent Barré, Erik Dietman or Roberto Matta. The museum also organizes temporary exhibitions, such as the one dedicated to Thérèse Le Prat in 2016.

The museum benefits from the label Musée de France, guaranteeing missions of conservation, restoration and cultural diffusion. He participates in scientific exhibitions and publications, while highlighting local figures such as Auguste Bartholdi, whose rooms have been dedicated to him since 2011. The site is part of a wider cultural dynamic, including the valorisation of the citadel and the Belfort Lion, historical symbols of the city.

The Belgian museum ensemble was ranked second in the middle-city category in the 2016 Journal of the Arts ranking. This ranking reflects the diversity of the collections, combining ancient, modern (Mauritius-Jardot donation) and contemporary art, as well as the city's commitment to preserving and mediating heritage. Temporary exhibitions, such as those of Tower 46, complement this offer with various themes, from archaeology to committed art.
