Origin and history

The Dehlingen Museum is an archaeological site dedicated to the preservation and enhancement of a villa and Gallo-Roman gardens, known as Gurtelbach. Located in Dehlingen, in the Greater East region, this monument offers a material testimony of the Roman occupation in this part of Alsace. The remains allow us to study lifestyles, domestic architecture and agricultural practices of the Gallo-Roman era.

Gallo-Roman villas, such as the Gurtelbach, were generally rural estates owned by local elites or Roman settlers. They played a central role in the agricultural economy and the romanization of conquered territories. In Dehlingen, this type of site illustrates the integration of local populations into the Roman Empire, notably through the adoption of construction techniques, landscape developments and Rome-inspired production methods.
