Origin and history
The Museum of Popular Traditions Marius Audin was created in 1942 by Marius Audin, a master printer from Lyon and regional historian from Beaujeu. His objective was to gather objects and documents illustrating the daily life, trades and traditions of Beaujolais. The collections, of great wealth, are the result of his careful work and subsequent donations and acquisitions. They cover a variety of fields such as ethnology, local history, craft techniques and industry, offering a complete panorama of Beaujolais culture throughout the centuries.
The museum houses reconstructions of typical 19th-century living and working spaces, such as a Beaujolais interior, a saboterie, a tannery or an old classroom. It also highlights specific aspects of the region, such as viticulture (vine processing, grape harvest, winemaking, cooperage) and companionship, particularly in the field of framework. One lapidary room exhibits remains of the Collegiate of the Sires de Beaujeu, while another is dedicated to the art of engraving in the 20th century thanks to the Burnot collection.
Among the remarkable pieces are an old room of the Hôtel-Dieu with its medical objects, agricultural tools, geological and prehistoric collections (including the Savoye collection), as well as a series of antique dolls and their accessories, offered by an antique shop in Villefranche. These elements illustrate the diversity of Beaujolais's know-how and material heritage, while emphasizing the importance of donations in enriching collections.
Set in an old 18th century private property, the museum benefits from the label Musée de France. Its official address, Place de l'Hôtel de Ville in Beaujeu (Rhône), makes it a central place for the preservation and transmission of local memory. The accuracy of its geographical location is assessed as fair (note of 5/10), but its heritage and cultural interest remains undeniable for the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region.
