Origin and history

The Nogent-le-Rotrou Municipal Museum is housed in the Renaissance rooms of the Château Saint-Jean, a building classified as a historical monument. It presents a diverse collection of works of art, including paintings, sculptures, art objects, furniture and archaeological pieces. The museum benefits from the label Musée de France, guaranteeing the quality of its collections and its management.

Founded in 1862 thanks to the bequests of M. Ferrières and Mademoiselle Clara Filleul de Pétigny, the museum was originally located in the town hall. In 1959, he was gradually transferred to the Château Saint-Jean, acquired by the municipality. Since 1972, it has also housed collections of the Perche Museum, dedicated to local history and regional life. Visitors are welcomed in the old guard room, while the castle park, surrounded by fortifications, offers a medieval and Renaissance interpretation garden.

The museum's collections cover mainly the 19th and 20th centuries. In painting, there are works by Clara Filleul, Jean Louis Jacottet and Louis Moullin, often inspired by local landscapes and monuments. The sculpture is represented by artists such as Camille Gaté, Félix Charpentier and Ernest Henri Dubois. Temporary exhibitions, such as the one dedicated to Camille Gaté in 2016, complement the cultural offer.

The Château Saint-Jean, in addition to housing the museum, plays a central role in valuing the local heritage. Its park and fortifications offer a preserved historical setting, while the collections reflect the cultural identity of the Perche. The museum actively participates in the dissemination of regional history, notably through initiatives such as donations for restoration of the site.
