Origin and history

The Musée départemental des Hautes-Alpes came into being in 1794, when Baron de Ladoucette, Préfet des Hautes-Alpes, created the Musée Central du Département in Gap. By 1804-1805, the first archaeological collections were enriched by the excavations of La Bâtie-Montsaléon. In 1848 the idea of a space dedicated to archives and natural heritage emerged, while in 1874-1879 the archivist Robert Long built a first archaeology museum within the Prefecture. The Abbé Paul Guillaume and the Société d'Etudes des Hautes-Alpes (founded in 1881) amplify the collections, giving the museum an encyclopedic character close to the cabinets of curiosities.

In 1892, the legacy of ornithologist Léon Olphe-Galliard (birds, nests, scientific works) marked a turning point. A National Lottery voted in 1901 financed the construction of the current building, designed by the departmental architect Chaudier. Inaugurated in 1910, the Museum of Fine Arts moved to the Parc de La Pépinière in Gap, a strategic crossroads between Grenoble, Marseille and Italy. Its collections, transferred between 1908-1909, cover archaeology, fine arts, ethnology and natural sciences, with flagship pieces such as the Bronze Age trimmings or the Queyras fonds.

In the 20th century, the museum evolved: rehabilitation in the 1980s, labeled Musée de France in 2002, and decennial renovations of collections (2004-2015, 2016). In 2012-2013, the State definitively transferred ownership of the works to the Department. The building, in classic style, is distinguished by its pink Guilleste marble and engraved pediments. Today, it combines local heritage (numismatic, religious art, sound archives of the Resistance) and extra-European collections (Africa, Asia, Oceania), while modernizing its tools (digital inventory).
