Origin and history
The Museum of Public Assistance - Hospitals of Paris was founded in 1934 to enhance the hospital heritage and make its history known. It is the oldest hospital museum in France, bringing together nearly 12,000 works and inventoried objects, ranging from paintings and sculptures to medical instruments and pharmaceutical collections. These elements illustrate hospital life from the Middle Ages to the contemporary era, providing a comprehensive overview of the evolution of medical care and practices.
The museum, currently closed to the public, preserves remarkable pieces such as 18th-century paintings, a collection of pharmaceutical faiences, old bottles, and a reconstruction of the Watchroom of the Hospital of Charity (1860). His collections cover a variety of fields, including fine arts, local history, medical science and ethnology. Although its access is now restricted, consideration is being given to its future redeployment.
Located at 10 rue des Fossés-Saint-Marcel in the 5th arrondissement of Paris, the museum is labeled "Musée de France". Its exact address and GPS location correspond to a historical site linked to Public Assistance, a major institution in the French hospital landscape. The available data highlight its heritage importance, despite the accuracy of the location considered poor (note 5/10).
