Origin and history

The Clairac automaton museum is housed in a former Benedictine abbey. This monument, located in the commune of Clairac in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, bears witness to a dual vocation: a medieval religious heritage and a contemporary cultural conversion. Benedictine abbeys, like Clairac, played a central role in the economic, spiritual and social life of the regions they occupied.

Their architecture often reflected their importance, combining places of prayer, work spaces and learning centres. Today, their reuse for museums or other cultural projects helps preserve this heritage while making it accessible to the public.
