Origin and history

The Hieron Museum, located in Paray-le-Monial, is the oldest sacred art museum in France designed as such. Founded on the initiative of the Jesuit Victor Drevon and Baron Alexis de Sarachaga between 1881 and 1884, it gathers hundreds of works around the theme of the Eucharist, in connection with Christ's apparitions to Saint Marguerite-Marie Alacoque in the seventeenth century in this city. This project aimed to create a space dedicated to the artistic and spiritual celebration of the Eucharist, in a post-Catholic Reform context.

The building, built between 1890 and 1893 by the Parisian architect Noël Bion, is distinguished by its eclectic architecture: neoclassical facade, Eiffel-style metal frame, and a large octagonal hall illuminated by glass windows. Closed in the 1990s due to water damage, it was completely renovated in 2005 under the direction of architects Catherine Frenak and Béatrice Jullien. The works, restored at the C2RMF in Versailles, were resettled there with a new museum trail.

The museum houses various collections, from paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries (Italian, Spanish and Flemish schools) to contemporary works. Among his treasures, the Via Vitae (1894-1904) of goldsmith Joseph Chaumet — a monumental piece of gold, ivory and precious stones — is classified as National Treasure. Since 2005, the museum also includes temporary exhibitions of modern art, such as those of Maurice Denis, Jean-Georges Cornélius, or Alfred Manessier, creating a dialogue between sacred traditional and contemporary creation.

The Hiero was the victim of several attempts to steal, notably in 2017 (theft of Romay crowns) and in 2022-2024 (bracings targeting Via Vitae). These events marked its recent history, highlighting the invaluable value of its collections. Ranked a Historic Monument since 2015 and labeled Musée de France, it remains a major place for sacred art and Burgundy heritage.

His cultural role goes beyond conservation: he explores the evolution of Christ's figure through the centuries, mixing historical, iconographic and spiritual approaches. The Romanesque tympanum of Anzy-le-Duc (XII century) and works like The Sacred Heart of Maurice Denis illustrate this diversity. Each year, thematic exhibitions (e.g. "A spirituality to women" in 2013) reinforce its anchor in contemporary artistic debate.
