Origin and history

The Arudy Museum was inaugurated in 1972 in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, within the Hotel Pouts, a building classified as a Historical Monument. This museum exhibits archaeological objects, such as Neanderthal axes, Magdalenian sagaies and neolithic tools, as well as natural elements of the Pyrenees National Park (fauna, flora, geology). It also showcases the local traditions of shepherds, carriers and artisans of the d'Ossau valley, through their costumes, rites and tools.

The Hotel Pouts, an ancient 17th-century lay abbey, was probably built on the foundations of a medieval or reborn abbey, as evidenced by some low halls retaining labasses (local stone) and a Renaissance fireplace. This noble building, adorned with lily flowers and a marble portal, belonged to the Labarthe family until the Revolution, when its monarchic symbols were erased. Today, it houses the museum and its collections dedicated to the natural and cultural history of the region.

The museum's permanent exhibitions cover three main themes: prehistoric archaeology (tools, bones of missing animals such as cave bison), popular arts and traditions ( ancestral crafts, local festivals) and the natural riches of the Pyrenees National Park. These collections offer a complete panorama of life in the Ossau Valley, from prehistoric times to modern times, pastoral and mining.

The museum benefits from the label Musée de France and is located at 2 Rue de l'Eglise in Arudy. Its exact address, recorded in the Museofile database, makes it a central place for the preservation and dissemination of the Osalian heritage. The accuracy of its geographical location is estimated as fair (note 5/10), based on available data.
